Petrified Wood is known by many names such as agatized wood or fossilized wood. Formed from trees up to millions of years old, each piece is always different. Although you may not expect it, it is a gemstone.  In fact, it is the state stone of Washington, U.S.A. and is the provincial stone of Alberta, Canada.
